Dental prices in New Zealand: Your guide to the costs of oral health treatment

Here’s a list of dental prices in New Zealand, from routine check-ups to oral surgery. Learn how comprehensive health insurance can help with your dental costs.

9 min to read

Dental prices in NZ vary widely, leaving many Kiwis unsure how to budget for their oral health needs. While the New Zealand government offers a range of free or subsidised dental services, accessing these can sometimes come with a catch - long wait times. In December 2024, over 3,800 patients had been waiting more than four months for dental treatments, highlighting the challenges of relying solely on public care.

Health insurance makes a significant difference, partially funding your private oral surgery and dental treatments while avoiding lengthy delays. Policywise can guide you in comparing the best medical insurance to customise your dental and healthcare cover, without breaking the bank.

Why is dental care important?

Taking care of your teeth and gums is a positive way to boost self-esteem and dental longevity while helping you avoid dental issues that cause pain, infections, and multiple trips to the dentist.

Alarmingly, the 2009 NZ Oral Health Survey revealed that one in three adults had untreated tooth decay, and a similar proportion exhibited early signs of gum disease. Furthermore, 15% were found to have moderate to severe gum disease. Even as one of New Zealand’s most preventable and common diseases, it seems tooth decay is on the rise.

Ways to pay for dental services

Dental care in New Zealand is expensive, but there are several options available, including dental insurance, to help you manage the costs.

1. Comprehensive health insurance with dental benefits

Many comprehensive health insurance policies include oral surgeries as part of their base plan, with an option to include routine dental treatments as an add-on. This cover can significantly reduce out-of-pocket expenses for both simple and major dental procedures.

Base cover

Comprehensive health insurance plans generally cover oral surgeries under their built-in benefits. These include surgeries to:

  • remove impacted or unerupted teeth, cysts, or soft tissue swellings, and
  • to drain oral abscesses

Dental add-ons

If you want to include routine or preventive dental treatments in your cover, some comprehensive health plans allow you to add this option. Dental add-ons can cover up to 80% of your treatment cost, subject to benefit limits of $500-$750 per claims year or policy year. A waiting period will apply before you can access this benefit.

Depending on your policy, you can use this additional dental cover for procedures such as:

  • Routine check-ups, X-rays, cleaning, scaling, fillings, and extractions
  • Root canal treatments, crowns, bridges, and dentures.

Some dental plans also cover a portion of costs for orthodontic treatments, such as braces and Invisalign. Orthodontic treatments are usually part of your loyalty benefits after several years of dental cover and are subject to claim limits.

2. Everyday plans

Everyday insurance plans can help cover partial costs of your dental treatments, up to a set annual limit. However, these plans cannot cover major medical costs, such as oral surgeries or other expensive private hospital treatments.

3. ACC

If you require dental treatment due to an accident, sports injury, or complication from a medical or dental procedure, the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) may help cover part of the costs.

4. Free dental service in NZ

Basic dental care services are free for children and teenagers up to their 18th birthday.

Kids, teens, and adults who need hospital dental services can choose to go through the public health system when referred by an oral health professional. However, this option may have long waiting times.

5. WINZ dental benefits

If you’re on a low income or receiving government benefits, Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ) can help cover emergency dental costs.

6. Pay later options and payment plans

Many private dental practices in New Zealand offer flexible ‘pay later’ options and payment plans, allowing you to spread the cost of treatment over time.
